Abstract

This study aims to analyze the public's understanding of vote selling practices in the 2024 Legislative Elections in Sibaluton Village. The recurring phenomenon of money politics has become normalized in society, with gifts from legislative candidates often interpreted as direct assistance or good fortune, thus posing a serious challenge to democratic integrity. This study used a qualitative ethnographic approach conducted in Sibaluton Village during the 2024 Legislative Elections period, involving six purposively selected informants. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, while data analysis utilized George Homans' (1961) social exchange theory and James Coleman's (1990) rational choice theory. The results show that the practice of money politics is formed through short-term transactional relationships that encourage people to view votes as a commodity of economic value that can be exchanged for material benefits. Furthermore, despite preventative efforts by election supervisors, public participation in oversight has not been effective, thus this practice continues. This research contributes to enriching the understanding of the social construction of money politics in society and emphasizes the importance of strengthening political awareness and public participation in election supervision as an effort to improve the quality of democracy more broadly.
