Exploring Parental Communication Strategies in Mediating Smartphone Use Among Early Childhood

Abstract

This study aims to examine parental motivation, changes in children's behavior, and parental communication strategies in supervising smartphone use in early childhood through the perspective of Parental Mediation theory. This study employs Edmund Husserl's phenomenological approach, utilizing data collection through in-depth interviews with five parents selected purposively, and supported by literature studies. Data validity was carried out through source triangulation. The results of the study indicate two primary motivations for parents' use of smartphones with children: to calm them and as an educational medium. Meanwhile, regarding behavioral changes, it was found that excessive smartphone use has an impact on emotional instability, decreased social interaction, and physical health disorders in children. The communication strategies implemented by parents include co-use, supervision, active mediation, restrictive mediation, and technical mediation, which they adjust to suit the conditions of each child.
